Client stories

Client:

My client is in his 60s, has two adult children and cares for his grandchild weekly.

Background:

A car accident over a decade ago left him with lasting injuries, including arthritis in his ankle, hip, and lower back. The accident significantly impacted his mobility and caused chronic pain. Prior to our sessions, he reported significant anger and frustration due to the constant pain, which severely disrupted his sleep. He had previously relied heavily on morphine for pain relief but discontinued its use.

Initial Assessment:

During our first session, he presented with extremely tense feet and a notably hard pancreas reflex. The pancreas reflex is often associated with an overall love of life and the ability to find inner balance. A hard pancreas reflex can suggest a diminished sense of life's sweetness, which aligns with the challenges my client has faced.

Treatment Approach:

The primary focus of the session was to address his sleep issues and alleviate his pain and emotional distress. Reflexology techniques were employed to:

  • Regulate Sleep: Emphasis was placed on the Insomnia Point and other relevant reflexes to improve sleep patterns.
  • Address Arthritis: Specific attention was given to the reflexes corresponding to his affected areas, particularly the lower back and hip.
  • Reduce Stress & Anger: The overall goal was to promote relaxation and reduce anxiety, stress, and anger.
  • Improve Mood: Stimulation of the brain reflex, specifically the hypothalamus, was aimed at improving mood, balancing hormones, and potentially alleviating depression. This also helps release natural pain relievers.

Initial Outcomes:

He reported significant positive changes following the first session. He experienced a remarkably long and restful sleep (10 pm to 3 am), which was a significant improvement for him. While the quality of his sleep diminished slightly over the following week, he reported feeling calmer and more relaxed overall. Although the pain persisted, he described it as more manageable.

Recommendations:

Weekly sessions were recommended to further assess the effectiveness of reflexology in improving his sleep, reducing pain and managing his emotional distress. As the weeks continued his sleep improved considerably and the pain became more manageable when he was having regular sessions.

Client:

My client experienced two miscarriages before the birth of her daughter. She then tried to conceive for another 3 years before she began receiving regular reflexology treatments.

Concurrent Care:

The client was also under the care of a specialist hospital in London and a nutritional clinic in Tunbridge Wells for dietary support.

Initial Assessment:

  • Menstrual Cycle: Detailed discussions focused on her menstrual cycle, including any spotting experienced before the onset of full bleeding.
  • Emotional Trauma: The client acknowledged the emotional impact of trying to conceive, admitting to suppressing her emotions and a lack of open communication with her partner regarding their shared experiences.

Treatment Approach:

  • Seren Reproflexology: Drawing from the training with Barbara Scott's Seren Reproflexology, weekly reflexology sessions were tailored to align with the specific phase of her menstrual cycle.
  • Partner Involvement: Her partner's semen analysis was reviewed, and her previous fertility test results and basal body temperature charts were  evaluated.

Initial Outcomes:

After weekly reflexology sessions spanning 3 months, I was beyond excited to hear my client had a positive pregnancy test. Such a wonderful start to her next chapter.

Client:

This client has been experiencing a range of perimenopausal symptoms for over a year, including hot flushes, cognitive difficulties (brain fog), emotional outbursts, mood swings, insomnia and painful periods.

Initial Assessment:

A comprehensive assessment was conducted, encompassing the client's exercise habits, lifestyle factors and dietary intake.

Treatment Approach:

  • Reflexology  Protocol: A specific reflexology protocol designed to address perimenopausal symptoms was implemented.
  • Hormonal Regulation: The treatment focused on supporting the body's natural hormonal balance and regulating its rhythms.

Initial Outcomes:

  • Lifestyle  Changes: Following the first session, the client initiated significant lifestyle changes, including the introduction of Pilates and weight training, as well as reducing alcohol consumption.

  • Symptom Reduction:
    • Cognitive Function: The client reported a marked improvement in cognitive function, no longer experiencing work disruptions due to brain fog.
    • Emotional Regulation: Premenstrual tearfulness, a common symptom for the client, was significantly reduced.
    • Hot  Flushes: The intensity of hot flushes decreased, with the client experiencing only mild warmth rather than severe overheating.
    • Menstrual  Pain: Menstrual pain was significantly alleviated.

Recommendations:

  • Treatment Frequency: Weekly reflexology sessions were recommended throughout the menstrual cycle, followed by a transition to monthly maintenance sessions.

Key Considerations:

  • This case study demonstrates the potential benefits of reflexology in alleviating menopausal symptoms.
  • Combining reflexology with lifestyle modifications can significantly enhance treatment outcomes.
  • Regular and consistent reflexology sessions may be beneficial in managing the fluctuating hormonal changes associated with menopause.

Client:

This is a fascinating example that demonstrates the potential of reflexology to address migraines for a 33 year old female client.

Initial Assessment:

  • Multiple Imbalances: The initial assessment revealed a significant number of  imbalances, including the pineal gland (responsible for sleep-wake cycles), shoulders (indicating stress and tension), descending colon (relating to digestive issues), sinus and neck (suggesting potential respiratory and tension-related issues), and the brain reflex itself.
  • Connection to Symptoms: These initial imbalances directly correlated with the client's presenting symptoms of migraines, insomnia, and potential stress.

Progress and Challenges:

  • Yellow Feet: The appearance of yellow feet in the second session pointed towards potential liver congestion, which can be linked to poor digestion and nutrient absorption. The vitamin D deficiency further supported this observation.
  • Chocolate Consumption: Increased chocolate intake could have exacerbated digestive issues and potentially triggered migraines.
  • Vagus Nerve Imbalance: The emergence of a vagus nerve imbalance in the fourth session was crucial. The vagus nerve plays a significant role in the parasympathetic nervous system, responsible for relaxation and rest. An imbalance can contribute to the "fight-or-flight"      response, leading to increased stress, anxiety, and sleep disturbances.

Positive Outcomes:

  • Significant  Improvement: The fifth session marked a significant turning point with a dramatic reduction in migraines and a significant improvement in sleep quality.
  • Lifestyle Changes: The client's reintroduction of exercise a previously enjoyed  activity, suggests a positive shift in lifestyle and stress management.
  • Reduced Imbalances: The final session demonstrated a marked reduction in imbalances, indicating a significant improvement in overall bodily function.

Key Takeaways:

  • Holistic Approach: This case study highlights the holistic nature of      reflexology, addressing not only the presenting symptoms but also the      underlying imbalances contributing to those symptoms.
  • Importance  of Lifestyle Factors: The case emphasizes the importance of considering lifestyle factors such as diet, stress management, and  physical activity in conjunction with reflexology treatments.

Recommendations:

  • Continued Maintenance: Regular monthly sessions were recommended to maintain the positive effects and prevent the recurrence of migraines.
  • Lifestyle Modifications: Continued emphasis on stress management techniques, a balanced diet, and regular exercise would further support the client's overall wellbeing.

Client:

A 70-year-old male with grown up children and grandchildren living close by.

Background:

The client underwent hernia surgery approximately one year ago. Since the surgery, he has experienced significant and persistent abdominal pain, which the medical profession has been unable to definitively diagnose. The pain is described as both constant and intermittent, with shooting pains originating from his right hip.

Impact of Pain:

The chronic pain significantly impacts the client's quality of life. He experiences severe sleep disturbances and is unable to engage in his previously enjoyed hobbies.

Initial Assessment:

The client presented with significant tension and a reduced capacity for relaxation.

Treatment Approach:

  • Reflexology Focus: The initial focus was on promoting deep relaxation through reflexology techniques.
  • Key Reflexes: Reflexes identified during the initial assessment included  the brain, spine, and the ascending and transverse colon.

Initial Outcomes:

  • Relaxation: The client reported feeling more relaxed than he had in a considerable time following the first session.
  • Sleep Improvement: He experienced five consecutive nights of good sleep after the first session, although sleep quality diminished the night      before the following session.
  • Pain Reduction: While the sharp, shooting pains persisted, the overall      level of constant abdominal pain decreased.

Ongoing Treatment:

  • Acupressure Integration: After the fourth session, acupressure points specifically targeting stomach pain and insomnia were incorporated into the treatment  plan.
  • Significant Pain Reduction: The client reported a significant improvement in sleep quality and a near-complete resolution of the persistent abdominal pain.

Current Status:

The client continues to receive monthly reflexology sessions as a form of ongoing pain management.

Clients:

Two female clients in their 40s presented with irregular menstrual cycles.

  • Client 1: Experienced two menstrual periods in a month with a 17 day cycle.
  • Client 2: Experienced prolonged menstrual bleeding for two weeks, followed by another period within the same 28-day cycle.

Contributing Factors: Both clients reported significant stress levels, attributed to heavy workloads and family pressures.

Treatment Approach:

  • Weekly  Reflexology: Weekly reflexology sessions were conducted, utilising protocols specifically designed to balance hormones, as learned from Reproflexology training.
  • Cycle-Based  Approach: Treatment sessions were timed to coincide with the specific phase of each client's menstrual cycle.

Initial Outcomes:

  • Client 1: The length of the menstrual cycle increased from 15-17 days to 26 days.
  • Client 2: The duration of menstrual bleeding decreased from two weeks to 5-6 days.

Follow-up:

  • Cycle Recurrence:
    • Client 1: After approximately two years, the menstrual cycle shortened back to 15 days.
    • Client 2: The duration of menstrual bleeding increased to 14 days.
  • Resumption of Treatment: Both clients resumed weekly reflexology sessions.
    • Client 1: The menstrual cycle returned to a 24-day cycle.
    • Client 2: The duration of menstrual bleeding returned to 6 days.

Recommendations:

  • Long-Term Maintenance: Both clients were advised to continue with monthly reflexology sessions to maintain hormonal balance and optimise the body's holistic healing processes.

Key Considerations:

  • This  case study highlights the potential benefits of reflexology in regulating irregular menstrual cycles.
  • Stress management and lifestyle factors, such as diet and exercise, should be  considered alongside reflexology for optimal outcomes.
  • Regular maintenance sessions may be crucial for long-term management of hormonal imbalances.
